The Gulf Stream, Then and Now

The left box in this illustration shows Benjamin Franklin's diagram of the Gulf Stream, drawn in 1770 after he conducted an investigation about why boats took longer sailing TO America from Europe than FROM. Amazingly, the modern NOAA map, shown on the right, is nearly a mirror image of Franklin's who drew his without the benefit of satellite.
