Birds Flying South
With the seasonal change comes the well-known time for migrating birds to make their way to warmer climates or other traditional wintering grounds. In the Myrtle Beach resort area, there’s great opportunity to check out flocks as they pause along our shores to rest and for food. According to reports, some of these fine feathered friends will be heading to as far as the southern tip of South America. A few of the birds that have been spotted in the past during this time include Willets, Whimbrels, Buff-Breasted Sandpipers, Dunlin, American Avocet, American Oystercatchers, Killdeer, Wilson’s Plovers, Short-Billed Dowitchers, and many more. Bring your binoculars and head out towards the beach, mudflats and marshy areas of Huntington Beach State Park for the best views before they’re all gone.
