What's the topic making the local papers today? Grass. Specifically bentgrass. Several area courses have upgraded their greens with the high-end grass over the last few seasons in effort to appeal to the high-end golfer. The problem? The sleek, fine-blade is much more delicate than the traditional Bermudagrass varieties, and the intense South Carolina heat is really doing a number on it. Groundskeepers have been struggling to keep their investment alive and thriving through the hottest summer months, putting a strain on resources and golfer performance in the effort. According to the article, the area's consulting agronomist feels an ultradwarf Bermudagrass would not only be better suited, but goes on to predict it's the solution most area courses will eventually adopt. Tidewater, TPC, Caledonia and True Blue are already using the Mini Verde ultradwarf Bermudagrass with a great-deal of success. However, courses like The Dunes, International World Tour, King's North and Surf Club are holding out---pointing out that the superior grass provides an unmatchable putting surface during the fall and spring peak Myrtle Beach golf vacation seasons.
