Family Vacation & Golf Newsletter

What kind of value can anyone put on experiencing unforgettable moments in the sun and surf while on vacation to the Grand Strand? Incomparable! Especially when no two sunsets are ever the same! Picturesque views from the beach, a boat, or your condo's broad living room window are priceless! These softer moments are just what we need to unwind and rejuvenate after the hard winter of 2009. A Grande Shores vacation has a special added value in our customer service, as enjoyed by so many of our guests who chose Easter to visit us.

Golfers, too, have been regaining their equilibrium this spring, staying here at the beach and playing at some of the area's best courses. For weeks now golfers have been increasing in numbers as the fairways green up and the golfing conditions allow short sleeved shirts (collared, of course) and Bermuda shorts. Blooming azaleas and dogwood have created stunning combinations of pastels with hues of chartreuse-green fairways and rust and gold marsh grasses.

So, let this newsletter message be your invitation to come see us for the warm weather. We are pleased to announce the resumption of the services at The Shoreline Café's Pool Grill and Bar, long a warm-weather favorite for the food-and-beverage poolside crowds. Come be a part of spring and summer at the beach!

Your Friends at Grande Shores Resort

Golf, the Beach, and Mom!

Surprise the mother in your life with a relaxing stay at the beach this year and include her in a golf outing to one of our beautiful golf courses here on the Grand Strand.

Participating golf courses invite you to reserve a complimentary round of golf for mom, a chance for her to enjoy spring in the coastal Carolinas and also to spend some time with you.

On May 9th, any mom not currently a resident of Horry, Georgetown, or Brunswick counties is invited to play free of charge if booked by a participating golf package provider. This special deal here at Grande Shores makes a fabulous way to celebrate the woman in your life. Consider treating her to a special Mother's Day dinner at the Shoreline Café, too. Golf and dinner might be just the right combination of treats to let her know how much you appreciate her.

Grande Shores In Action

  • Grande Shores continues its improvements indoors and out. The professional painting project continues on the average of 23 hours per week with the work showing dramatic results in common areas, storage areas, walkways, the oceanfront pool deck, oceanfront railings around the pool and lazy river, the conference room doors, and most of the storage doors. During the latter part of the month, we will use a lift to paint the elevated areas of large columns near the sandpit to the sixth floor.

  • Note: the indoor pool will be closed for one week in May for a repainting and resurfacing of the pool and spa areas. At the end of this refurbishment project, expect to see a perky new awning over the lobby's front door. Look for signs identifying doors to "Guest Registration," the Shoreline Café, and the service entrance of the Café near oceanfront.

  • New outdoor carpet has been installed in front of the conference center, with new artwork on the walls there, as well. All conference room chair upholstery has been also replaced, and all four spas have been resurfaced. Doors to the indoor restrooms have been replaced with the addition of new vanity and mirror. See the new carpeting in the luggage rack areas and elevators, as well.

  • Signage and lighting improvements have been made throughout the property with the addition of more lighting in the elevators.

  • Outside, the spring planting is in process. Over 150 colorful hibiscus plants and several truck loans of bedding plants will adorn the property with the project is completed.

Congratulations to the hard work and coordination efforts of our Engineering and Landscaping teams! In fact, everyone on staff has played a role in these improvements! Look for photo illustrations of these bright pick-me-ups in future newsletters and on the website!

Warm-Weather Happenings ~

  • Easter at Grande Shores - Celebration of this holiday included a beautiful sunrise over the water, a delicious breakfast buffet at Shoreline Café, a visit from the Easter Bunny (shown here having fun with some of his fans), and a special reverence for the meaning of Easter all around.

  • Shoreline Café's Pool Bar and Grill opens its service. Come and sit by the pool during your long, relaxing vacation or take a moment in a long weekend here at the beach to find a little time for yourself. The convenience of the Pool Bar and Grill cannot be underestimated, especially when you are doing your best to relax!

With the air's little spring nip, not everyone is going sleeveless by the pool, but as the weather warms up, people will begin flocking in even larger numbers to enjoy the sun and fresh air. Come say hello to Dale on duty cooking and Sally (shown here) who tends the bar area. Sally has been operating the pool bar for over ten years and can describe how the Grand Strand has evolved over the years to the year-round vacation center that it is, so come by and say "hello."

  • May Attractions - The weather and the beach are the two key attractions here! Yes, so much is going on that you will yearn for more hours in the day. New amusements and attractions are opening daily around the Grand Strand and along the beach. For example, the new boardwalk just opened a long stretch with the remaining portion due to be completed by Memorial Day. A popular dining and entertainment district, Broadway at the Beach is gaining a "zip" line for thrill seekers who also will enjoy the adjacent ropes climbing course.

Featured Recipe - Sand Bucket Dessert with Edible "Sand"

To launch you into the wildly wacky warm-weather months, here is a fun children's recipe favorite with many possible variations. Makes approximately 4-6 servings so have a clean pail and shovel for each child. Can make the mixture in each child's bucket or prepare one larger bucket and serve into the children's smaller buckets.

Ingredients:
  • Beach- or shell-shaped candies (pre-made, ready to eat)
  • New and clean plastic buckets and shovels
  • 20 ounce package of crumbled vanilla wafers
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 8 ounce-package of cream cheese
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 3-ounce packages of instant vanilla pudding
  • 3 cups of milk (whole or percentage)
  • 1 12-ounce container of whipped topping, thawed not frozen.

Directions:
  • Soften the butter in a microwave or stovetop.
  • Put butter in large mixing bowl. Repeat softening process with cream cheese and add to the same mixing bowl. (Note: You can also place butter, cream cheese and whipped topping on counter for 1 hour to soften.) Mix butter and cream cheese together.
  • Place powdered sugar in a sifter and sift powdered sugar into the butter-cream cheese mixture. Mix in the powdered sugar until it is well blended.
  • In a medium size bowl, add milk. Sprinkle pudding over milk and whisk or beat until thickened, about 1 minute.
  • Add the pudding and the whipped topping to the cream cheese mixture. Mix until smooth using a wooden spoon or electric mixer.
  • In a food processor, process vanilla wafers until they form fine, even crumbs or place them in a plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin until finely crumbly to resemble sand.
  • In the buckets, place a layer of crushed vanilla wafers, then a layer of cream cheese-pudding mixture. Keep layering until full (about four layers of each) and end with a layer of crushed wafers. Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate several hours. Before serving, decorate with beach-shaped candies such as shell candy, gummy fish, even gummy worms

Cook's Note: This may be made ahead of time and frozen to keep it for outdoor picnics.

Local Events Calendar

As the weather warms, the list of things to see and do lengthens exponentially. Attractions need not have a monetary cost attached, either. Many, many events and special occasions all across the 60-mile stretch of coastal Grand Strand and beyond are absolutely free.

So, scan the list of options for the items that interest you. Shorten the list according to preferences for indoors or out, competition or leisure pursuits, sports or fine arts, active or passive, beach music or heavy metal, or whatever suits. Then, come on out and see what's going on! Having fun? Let us know, too. We would love to include your adventure in the newsletter.

  Guest Comments

"The water is warm. Wish you were here!" This is an example of many such sentiments that kids on spring break sent to their friends back home. Right now in April, that comment usually applies to the pool water, not so much the ocean water, though a few brave souls are out there enjoying the waves.

Grande Shores thanks each and every guest for feedback, much of it generated from phone calls, emails, and even by hand-written paper letters. We congratulate each person for taking the time to send us his or her thoughts. Every piece of communication helps us to maintain our quality and consistency and adjust where needed.

Absolutely, without a doubt Grande Shores is the best place to stay in MB, everything you could want in a hotel and the manager (Jenna) and staff truly make sure you are very pleased with your stay.....rooms are very nice and have everything you need in them and the hospitality is awesome! I was prepared to make the marathon walk from the car to the room with all the stuff from the trunk when I was happily surprised to find that the deck is attached to the motel and we could drive to the level of the room and make a short walk to the room. its great not having to take the crowded elevator from room to car...just get out of the car and walk straight to the room at any level. The staff was warm and inviting and the room was clean and well appointed. Its centrally located and very easy to find. They have a restaurant with a breakfast bar. It's clean, inexpensive...loved the place.

Our stays at the Grande Shores have always been delightful. We're in the process of making reservations for this May and can't wait to see the new renovations to the dining room. Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Email to Grande Shores quality control from Hughes family, 2.25.2010.

I love staying at the Grande Shores Resort. The Front Desk Associate Erin was so helpful making our stay perfect. Erin made us feel like the Grande Shores really cares about [us as] their guests. The parking at the Grande Shores is fantastic; you can park right on the floor your staying on, just a short walk to your room. I absolutely love the hot tubs above the sixth floor over looking the ocean. The Grande Shores Restaurant has a wonderful breakfast buffet every morning and Happy Hour every evening between 4pm - 7pm featuring - 35-cent wings ! You have to try their wings -- easily the best on the beach ! This was my second stay at the Grande Shores Resort: reasonable prices, a friendly helpful Front Desk, comfortable beds, rooms that overlook the ocean, hot tubs above the sixth floor, the best wings in Myrtle Beach. I can't wait for my next stay! Thanks to all the Grande Shores associates for making our stay perfect !

Fun Facts

We have evidence that swimming pools have been around for a long while. Based on ancient Egyptian drawings and paintings, we know that people swam in pools back in 2500 AD.

An hour of vigorous swimming will burn up to 650 calories, more than walking or biking. Swimming strengthens your heart and lungs, works out all of the body's major muscles, and helps to reduce stress.

Water's buoyancy makes swimming the ideal exercise for physical therapy and rehabilitation or for anyone seeking a low-impact exercise.

Also with the warm weather comes baseball season! Did you know that Babe Ruth wore a cabbage leaf under his cap to keep him cool while out on the ball field? He changed it every 2 innings!

Hiking is also a popular warm-weather favorite sport. As you stroll along looking at the forest canopy overhead, consider that millions of trees in the world are accidentally planted by squirrels burying nuts and then forgetting where they hid them.

More money is spent on gardening than on any other hobby! Gardeners on vacation, check our local nurseries for your herbs, perennials, and annuals to take home with you.

If you need to change your auto's oil, remember that one gallon of used motor oil can ruin approximately one million gallons of fresh water!

Fingernails grow 4 times faster than do toenails. No wonder why there are so many nail salons here in the Grand Strand.

An earthquake on December 16, 1811, caused parts of the Mississippi River to flow backwards.

Honolulu is the only place in the United States that has a royal palace, but if you reserve a "Perfectly Pampered Prince or Princess" package at the Grand Shores, your child can be royally treated in this "palace" by the sea.

The word "set" has the most definitions of all words in the English language. Can you think of other ways to use this word besides the following? "Set the coin on the table." Bring your set of golf clubs." "Cement sets quickly." "They were set on buying, not renting." "Set the thermostat." The custard set finally." "Your reservation is all set." "He is set in his ways." "The sun sets in the west." "The stage was set for comedy." The set design is elaborate."

Smelling (not eating) bananas and/or green apples can help you lose weight!

A lump of pure gold the size of a matchbox can be flattened into a sheet the size of a tennis court!

A sneeze travels out your mouth at over 100 MPH! No wonder colds and flu spread, especially when people who cover their mouths by hand then touch a doorknob or tabletop.

Slugs have 4 noses! (Thank goodness, slugs do not sneeze.)

Recycling one glass jar saves enough energy to watch TV for 3 hours!

One quarter of the bones in your body are located in your feet!
