Suntan lines are being formed right here at the beach, removing any lingering questions about whether it's time for summer vacation! Summer has begun! At least unofficially until June 21st when the calendar launches it. May is the month when most school terms conclude, families plan for the summer months, and the weather begins to warm up, even in the north. Are you on your way here yet?

For those waiting until June, July, or August to begin carefree living in bare feet, flip-flops, tank-tops, and bathing suits, we invite you to check out the beach-cam so that you can begin slipping into a virtual laid-back, slow-life, mind-wandering state until you can actually be here in person. LIFE'S AT THE BEACH.

All during the spring Grande Shores has been preparing for this particular time of year, ensuring a relaxing oceanfront vacation for everyone who comes here. Our earlier newsletters have put some of our many hard-working in the spotlight to showcase the outcome - a sparkling, vibrant Grande Shores for you!

Our Carolina coastal area has many festivals and events planned over the coming months. With the opening new boardwalk stretching for over a mile from the 14th Avenue Pier to just south of the Second Avenue Pier, count on a true beach experience when you come here. Count on many new attractions such as the zip line at Broadway at the Beach, many varieties of food, and lots of beach fun to be perfectly in place for you to burn off layers of winter stress. Just don't forget that "burn" has two sides to it, so do pack the sunscreen.

Congratulations, everyone! We made it to SUMMER!

Come be a part of all the beach fun!

Happenings In and Around Myrtle Beach

Here in the Grand Strand we now have another way to show off our beautiful Atlantic Ocean, sparkling sunshine, and sandy beaches. The new Myrtle Beach Boardwalk has been drawing people to it since it opened earlier this month. Perfect for sight-seeing and beach access, the new promenade stretches across more than a mile of sandy oceanfront terrain. Some sections opened earlier than scheduled, over the Easter holiday, and just a few days ago the public announcement and ribbon-cutting ceremony opened all of it. Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment initiated the 1.2 mile project which took about 9 months to build and required over 800,000 feet of lumber for the entire walkway. That is 300,000 nails, 555,000 screws, and 10,000 bolts, if anyone is counting. Come experience it for yourself!

My husband and I have been vacationing in Myrtle Beach for years, but this year (for our 34th wedding anniversary) was our first visit to Grande Shores. It will NOT be our last. This was, without a doubt, the best experience we have ever had at Myrtle Beach. The accommodations were top notch, the staff efficient, helpful, and friendly, and the buffet breakfast was terrific. We will be telling everyone we know who vacations in Myrtle Beach about Grande Shores.

I could move in immediately and live there forever. The view and the sounds of the ocean were wonderful and relaxing. I am in hopes of coming back in the fall either by myself or with my grandson. My daughter came with me this time and enjoyed as well.

Just wanted you to know my family and I had a wonderful time! It is beautiful there and much more than I expected.

Our stays at the Grande shores have always been delightful. We're in the process of making reservations for this May, and can't wait to see the new renovations to the dining room. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Fun Facts

Canada has the largest number of self-employed women than any other country, and women contribute over $18 billion to Canadian economy each year. One-third of self employed Canadians are women, and women stay in business longer and their survival rates are higher than that of men. Women-owned businesses in Canada are expected to double over the next decade, so say demographic experts. Sounds as if lots of people there need to book the "Girlfriends' Getaway" package here at the Grande Shores!

Today spring and summer vacation destinations run the gamut from northwest Florida, the Texas coast, Atlantic side of Florida, Cancun, Acapulco, and other places that cost lots of money. Isn't the Grand Strand is a much better idea than the above because it is more affordable, requires less travel time, and has sooooo much fun!

In 1960, Fort Lauderdale, FL, firmly established itself as the national Spring Break headquarters with the release of the movie Where the Boys Are starring Connie Francis. Today, 2010, "spring break" has become synonymous with "Spring Fever," that wish-I-were-lying-on-a-beach-somewhere feeling most people get as soon as the weather warms up above freezing.

Ever wonder why wind begins to blows in the morning as the sun rises higher in the sky? The reason lurks in the weight of the air itself. Cold air weighs more than warm air, so the pressure of cold air is greater. When sun warms the air, the air expands, grows lighter, and begins to move around, mostly up and not in a straight line, either. In the northern hemisphere, the spin of the earth causes winds to curve to the right.

If you and your anxieties are stuck at home and can't get to the beach to relax, try some lemon balm tea to relax. Not the same as a beach vacation, is it?

Onion as a cure-all? The ancient Greeks thought so, and now modern researchers concur. In fact, even more than apples, an onion a day might help with your medical ailments. The reason has something to do with getting enough "quercetin" and "thiosulfinates." We don't know what those are, either, so it's best to ask your doctor.

Eye-blinking - it's said that blinking can predict whether we are telling a fib. However, quite simply it's a reflex action of our body to clear eyes from irritating foreign objects like dust. Fewer blinks than normal might be an indication that something more is going on to block this natural cleansing impulse - maybe a lie in progress or may something the doctor needs to check.

The eyes are also part of sneezing and close automatically during a sneeze as protection. Sneezes can be powerful involving the face, throat, and chest.
