Family Vacation & Golf Newsletter

As you enter the grounds of Grande Shores on your next visit here, we invite you to notice the beautiful showcase of fall produce and other traditions of the season currently on display at the front of the property. Our own Ana Milena Aristizabal, the Engineering Department's dispatcher, creatively assembles our seasonal decorations each year, for which we are grateful. In addition to being attractive, the exhibit is practical. All parts recycle easily: the pine straw will be used later as mulch for the tree in front of our adjacent sister property; the pumpkins will be made into pumpkin pies; mums will be planted to bloom again next year, and our famous scare crows slip back into their boxes to sleep until next fall 2010!

Fall weather is perfect for being outdoors and taking advantage of the many activities here in the South. New golf packages and discounts, for example, make a visit to our shores a "must do" experience for many sports enthusiasts, especially during this uncrowded time of year and especially with our variety of exciting deals such as the new "Terrific Tuesday," offering great opportunities at many area courses!

Nothing says autumn as much as the Thanksgiving holiday, and we hope that you will join us for the delicious traditional feast planned just for you (click here to see the menu online). Isn't this the year that you need some extra pampering? Just leave the labor and shopping to us; all you need are your loved ones, a yearning to relax, and a good appetite! Here's an idea! Tackle the holiday shopping and enjoy a beach vacation all in the same weekend, with plenty of relaxation built in for you!

So let's end the year on a high note, with lots of fun, good cheer, and the company of friends. We hope to see you here to enjoy the remaining weeks and days of 2009!

Your Friends at Grande Shores Resort

WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND GRANDE SHORES?

  • Ready for Guests Long-Term

We look forward to the arrival of our friends staying with us on a long-term basis, many who enjoy over-wintering here to avoid shoveling the deep snow and scraping the thick ice of their inland residences.

Grand Shores' staff has activities and interests all lined up. The bingo parties and casino cruises will occur again this year, as well as some new activities such as movie night, pot-luck dinners, game night, and outings to such fun places as Comedy Cabana, Legends in Concert, Dixie Stampede, and Crocodile Rocks. Of course, we are including lots of golf and miniature golf tournaments, too.

Our staff continues its careful attention to making each and every guest feel at home here, no matter what length the stay. In fact, we have shared tales of the fun and enthusiasm from off-season months with our new staff members who look forward to great times ahead.

  • Team Housekeeping

Employees at Grande Shores pitch in and work together to ensure that guests have a relaxing, successful, and enjoyable stay. Each sector around the property has its specific specialties, and the photo to the right shows "Team Housekeeping" during one of its planning meetings.

As a part of the workforce whom the guests see daily, Housekeeping members appreciate the importance of customer service and attention to detail.

  • Featured Employee for October - Wayne Smith

Meet Wayne Smith, our outstanding employee of the month for October. Working as our night auditor, Wayne undertakes a great deal of responsibility by being available for guests during the night.

Having been with the company for 11 years, he puts his extensive experience to use daily and is the one to contact if you have an after-hours problem. Greeting late arrivals, assisting with after-hours' requests, or keeping the property organized and humming are only a few of the tasks that Wayne undertakes with care and certainty. When something needs fixing or solving or untangling (such dilemmas occur more often in the middle of the night, for some reason), Wayne is the man with the magic touch!

    Good job, Wayne!

  • Golfing Adventures Through Grande Shores

Our Golf Department stays in tune with the area's golf courses to offer you the best rates, tee times, and golfing conditions possible. So, if you have any questions about golf along the Grand Strand, check with our experts in the Golf Department.

Have you heard about the attractive new discount package is called "Terrific Tuesday" which includes the following:
    • free Tuesday breakfast at the Shoreline Grill located at the resort,
    • complimentary drink coupon at Shoreline Grill, and
    • golf gift
    • a coupon valued at 15% off your dinner at Shoreline Grill,
    • a voucher for $20 off any purchase of $40/more in golf merchandise at any Burroughs and Chapin golf course pro shop (restrictions apply).

The best part of this deal, though, is when you book your golf course tee times. Play your choice of either Myrtlewood's Palmetto and Myrtlewood's Pinehills courses, or you can select a tee time at River Hills. Those wanting even more golf can save again by adding three rounds on Farmstead, Meadowlands, or Arcadian Shores golf courses, with one of these choices being FREE if played on a Tuesday.

We are conveniently online for you to book your fall, winter, and spring golf get-aways: www.MyrtleBeachGolf.net. You can also call 1.800.682.5699 to let our golf experts guide you in selecting the right combination of courses for your stay and play. Ask them about our new package called "Terrific Tuesday"!

This just in! Our Grande Shores guest Mr. Ron Estok called us recently to announce excitedly that he had just made a hole-in-one at Indigo Creek Golf Club on October 9th! The big event occurred on the 11th hole, a par 3 (154 yards), with a 7-iron in his hand. In his 40 years of golfing, this is his first hole-in-one. Now, with the sweet feeling of accomplishment warming him, Mr. Estok is trying for more.

    Congratulations, Mr. Estok!

Featured Recipe - Sautéed Calamari with Rice

Try the following dish using some of our native products: calamari and rice. This coastal area, once one of the nation's main rice producers, still has places that sell locally grown rice (make inquiries at Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet farmers' markets, and Barefoot at the Beach).

    This recipe serves 6.

    INGREDIENTS:

    • 1 Pound Calamari
    • 3 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
    • 2 Cloves of Fresh Garlic (Minced)
    • Dash of Fresh Ground Pepper + Dash of Salt
    • 1/2 Cup Fresh Chopped Parsley
    • 1/2 tablespoon Lemon juice
    • 2 Cups Cooked Long Grain Rice
    • 2 Cups Water
    • 1 Tablespoon Butter or Margarine
    • 1 Lemon For Garnish [optional]
    • Cilantro For Garnish [optional]

    DIRECTIONS:

    • In a large skillet heat olive oil on medium-high heat till hot. Sauté the calamari until each piece is golden brown (cook in small batches). Once the calamari is sautéed, place the cooked calamari on a warming tray or somewhere to retain the heat without cooking further.

    • In the same skillet, cook the minced garlic with extra olive oil if needed until golden brown and at its full aroma stage. Toss the calamari back in and sauté an extra 3 to 5 minutes, adding cilantro plus salt and pepper to suit your taste.

    • For the final stage, add the cilantro mixture to the rice and then toss them together lightly or serve the sautéed calamari on top of a bed of freshly cooked hot rice in a decorative layer draped over the rice.

    • For either, top off the dish with a sprig of fresh cilantro and a wedge of lemon. Then serve immediately.

    CUSTOMER SERVICE THROUGH GRANDE SHORES

    Jenna Hillman, Front Desk Manager

Those of you who have been visiting us for years will know this face and name. With much experience gained from having been with the company since 2002, Jenna Hillman has been involved with many guest-related activities here at Grande Shores so that she is undoubtedly on your "friends" list.

Originally, she began working as a part-time night auditor, rising to the position of full-time Front Office Manager. She enjoys what she does: meeting new guests and welcoming back returning guests. In her own words, here are some of her recent activities over the past several months:

We were busy this season training new staff and training interns from AHA (American Hospitality Association). We also cross-trained one J1 Student from Housekeeping who is planning on returning next spring again for the upcoming season.

I am proud to work at Grande Shores where I have been an active participant in many exciting events here. Most recently, I participated with a team of staff members at Grande Shores and its sister-property Horizon in an effort to raise $6060 for the Relay for Life, part of The American Cancer Society.

Now, as we move past summer to the holiday season, we are gearing up for our long-term guests' return to us, organizing their favorite events and planning new ones for them. Since my own family, originally from Michigan, is now scattered across the country, I have formed a close group of friends here in Myrtle Beach.

So, at your next visit, please stop in and say hello to Jenna. She is waiting to welcome you back to Grande Shores, back to your friends at the beach!

    Barbara Escobar, Department of Engineering

Meet Barbara Escobar, originally from Temascalcigo, México, and now from Myrtle Beach. She began her employment here in 2001 at one of our sister properties, working in the Housekeeping Department as housekeeper and rising to supervisor. Now she is a technician in Engineering. Her hard work and dedication have moved her through the various levels of the organization, and we at Grande Shores are all proud that she is on our team. Barbara's strong sense of responsibility and dedication have been instrumental in her success.

Thanks, Barbara, for your diligent efforts and commitment to the organization and its guests!

    Update from Our Guests:

Many of you who stay with us at Grande Shores consider this part of your lives to be an extension of family, friends, and warm feelings. And, as Jenna's article noted above, we feel the same about YOU! Of course, having a comfortable climate around here contributes in part to the feelings of warmth, but the most important ingredient is relationships.

Here is an excerpt from a letter to Grande Shore's management from one of our returning long-term guests:

Just sending this note to bring you up to date on our [lives].

If you haven't heard from some of your winter guests and our fellow Grande Shores Snowbirds, [we offer] an update to our " MB Reunion Weekend " which was held 25-28 Aug and attended by 30 persons who are winter residents at GS....

American Snowbirds who came on the 23rd [as follows, with the only person missing as Ed Johnson taking the picture]: Rosemary and Mike Johnson (Charlevoix, MI), Bill and Jacquie Lippert (Conneaut Lake, PA), and John and Joyce Houghteling (Courtland area, NY). We had a wonderful time with all, had a "Meet 'N' Greet" at Dick and Irene's on 24th Friday, a "BBQ" at our place on 25th, and a Sunday AM "Brunch" at Fred and Jane Lloyd's. After the brunch we headed out on the St. Lawrence River on a paddle wheeler boat tour of the "Thousand Islands" for about 3.5 hours from Kingston to approximately 18 miles up the river to Gananoque and back. South of the border visitor's were impressed with our town, and we were so pleased that they came.

It was great to see them all so soon after we left their company in April.

Here are some additional photos to enjoy:

As you might conclude, our guests enjoy being with each other as much as we enjoy having them all here!

    Fun Facts

    • Have you ever wondered how much a cloud weighs? A cloud's mass depends on its size and type. The scales will tip at nearly 1 1/2 billion pounds for one of those cumulous clouds that you see dotting the blue Carolina sky (those pillow-shaped puffy white ones), usually about 6/10ths of a mile squared.

    • One ancestor of the modern day human being, the Neanderthal, had a brain bigger than that of today's person.

    • The longest one-syllable word in the English language is "screeched."

    • The giant squid has the largest eyes in the world.

    • In Kansas, state law prohibits catching fish with your bare hands.

    • If your eyes are six feet above the surface of the ocean, the horizon will be about three statute miles away (not nautical mile which is a different length).

    • Almonds are a member of the peach family.

    • A shark can detect one part of blood in 100 million parts of water and then blink with both eyes (a feat that other fish cannot do).

    • South Carolina has a network of important rivers and watersheds that not only played important roles in shaping the state's history, they remain essential today. One is the Great Pee Dee (named for the Indian tribe), the main river in the northeastern part of the state intersecting both Carolinas. This river is said to be the original waterway cited in Stephen Foster's song Old Folks at Home (commonly known by its first line, "Way down upon the Suwannee River"). Why he changed it in his final version is a subject of much speculation, but if you hum a few bars substituting the name "Pee Dee" for "Suwannee," you might gain some idea.
