Family Vacation & Golf Newsletter

While it is hard to believe that the summer of '09 has come and gone, the beaches do have fewer feet now, digging into the soft sand, running through the waves. Children of all ages are still out here, enjoying the balmy conditions. Although Labor Day came a week later this year, they tend to be pre-school age. Many families with older children have headed home where school has opened and lives pick up at their normal pace after the relaxation here at the beach. The holiday season lies ahead.

Where one season closes, another opens. Golfers en masse have begun to arrive on our shores to play in local tournaments such as the WorldAm that just recently concluded on September 4th for over 3000 players. Grande Shores' golf packages, always an inviting opportunity for people to come to our coastal resort, provide even more attractive pricing this year especially. If you would like to get away for one last fling before the truly warm weather leaves us, now would be a great time to call us for one of these phenomenal arrangements on premier courses along the Grand Strand.

Meanwhile, somewhere far to the north, our friends in the upper reaches of New York, New England, and Canada are busily preparing to spend months away from home, relaxing in sunshine. These include the many people fondly called "Snowbirds" who spend their winter here at our beach. For them this is the time to begin to pack for the trip south.

Amazing as it seems when we here at the beach are still walking around barefooted, Thanksgiving is moving in fast, and the leaves of northern climates are turning colors. Our chef at Shoreline Cafe has prepared the menu which is on display at the resort's website. Now is none too soon to begin planning for where you want to spend this family-centered holiday, with perhaps some thought to joining us here and allowing us do most of the work to prepare your holiday feast for you!

So, as the temperatures cool down, fall activities are heating up as we enter the busy fall season. Give some thought to taking a break now and then for a long weekend here along the Grand Strand where we can pamper you with our great amenities. Such an idea makes sense this year because of the many special discounts available.

HAPPENINGS AROUND GRAND SHORES AND THE IMMEDIATE AREA

  • Summary of Success of Summer Relay for Life Activities - From June through Labor Day, the Relay for Life activities at Grande Shores have produced outstanding results in terms of monetary donations on behalf of The American Cancer Society, great fun for guests in watching and participating in the duck races and other fund-raising activities, and also in team-building between guests, staff, and the communities along the Grand Strand. Of course, one exciting fringe benefit from the Relay excitement was the crowning of our own Dennis Chestnut as "Miss Relay 2009."

To the guests, passers-by, and other contributors, we want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who supported us, whether in contributions to Relay or simply in cheering on our efforts.

Special thanks for on-site efforts in the many activities related to Relay for Life go to many staff members on the Grande Shores team. We must single out Dennis Chestnut, Supervisor of Engineering, whose tireless efforts over 32 lazy-river races of the "KenDucky Derby" kept the donations pouring in. This huge group of talented and creative people, plus the many other members of Myrtle Beach Seaside Resorts, who designed many original and interesting ways of raising money over the past several months. Ultimately, the entire amount of the goal set earlier in the year, $6,000, was achieved. Thank you, one and all!

  • Golf Packages at Grande Shores: Now that Labor Day has ended, why not toss the golf clubs in the car and spend some time with us. Many other golfers have already arrived to enjoy the more temperate weather, less trafficked streets, wide array of restaurants and night spots, and, of course, great golf courses. Golf packages provide attractive discounts through Grande Shores' golf reservation system, complete with comfortable accommodations and amenities to fit your life style.

If you want to play on competitive courses and escape to a relaxing beach location, check with www.MyrtleBeachGolf.net for details on our packages such as the Burroughs and Chapin collection that range geographically from lower Grand Strand to North Carolina. We have plenty of courses to choose from so that you can stay near where you play. Your accommodations, daily buffet breakfast, golf fees, and cart included in the rate which can apply for our three or five round packages. Another package selection to consider is the Myrtle Beach National which offers players a chance to walk in the footsteps of great golfing legends such as Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

  • Festivals and Special Events Those of you who spent some part of your summer here enjoying the many activities on or near the beach, Broadway at the Beach, Market Commons, Little River, or any parts in between might think that once Labor Day has concluded, so have the events. Not so! In fact, it seems that more is on the calendar now, especially with the fall harvest of tasty vegetables and fruits, shopping sales for back-to-school and end-of-year items, and also arts-and-crafts fairs. Many groups are choosing to hold their conventions here, and sports teams either book our venues for their competitions or stop here on their way from home to away games.

Fortunate to have year 'round sunshine and gentle ocean breezes, we have the perfect environment to make a vacation or any special event the celebration that you expect.

    Preparing Now for Flu Season

With an eye to the early arrival of cold and flu season, Grande Shores' personnel have begun strong support of effective daily health habits such as the following:

    • Wash hands often
    • Avoid close contact and crowds of people..
    • Avoid spreading germs. Keep hands away from your eyes, nose, mouth.
    • Cover mouth and nose at each sneeze or cough.
    • Practice good health habits (eat beneficial foods, get enough sleep, manage stress, etc.)
    • If sick, stay home to avoid spreading the illness.
    • Planning a flu shot clinic for employees and guests at one of the Myrtle Beach Seaside Resort properties.

The World Health Organization warns against a higher than normal number of upper respiratory problems this year, and health care specialists are already seeing cases, so we are making a point to take precautions at home, work, and out in public. With the many products of hand sanitizers available, we can clean our hands even without soap and water.

    • Season to taste with salt and pepper.
    • Into the cavity of each egg white half, mound some crab mixture (about 1 heaping tablespoon for each).
    • Place the crab-stuffed deviled eggs on a platter. Garnish each with small tarragon sprig, if desired, and serve when you are ready or refrigerate until half-time.

We stayed at the Grande Shores back in late July for a couple of nights. It was the perfect 2 bedroom condo. The view from the balcony was beautiful. There was plenty of room for 2 adults and 4 young adults. They kitchen was well equipped and thank goodness for the 2 bathrooms and places to put ones stuff. Can't wait to stay there next summer!

We recently stayed at the Grande Shores in Myrtle Beach at 77th Ave. We were there for 3 nights in July. I can't say enough good about the place and the people. Everyone was great. The service was great. You really have a good group of people working there. Everything was clean and easy to enjoy. Thanks from a happy customer.

First let me explain how picky I am about a hotel - No let me put it like this - my family didn't even want me to go on vacation because they knew I would be calling back complaining. A hotel/restaurant hasn't even gained a review from me I'm that bad, so trust me when I say this place is fantastic. I've paid far more for accommodations then I've paid here and had horrible service, food and had to sleep in my clothes for fear of catching something (and yes I was in the United States). The Grande Shores lives up to it's name - Great Location - Great Accommodations - Great Prices. The fourth floor is ideal or it was for us, we had an ocean view condo, it was spot -less to say the least. I had come equipped with Lysol - bleach and a whole basket of cleaning products as well as a set of new sheets and didn't have to use it (well did use the Lysol - creature of habit lol). Do yourself and family a favor check them out the staff is wonderful big congrats to Carol I hope that's right she was great in getting us in a day early. Good Job Grande Shores see you next year. Oh yeah I almost forgot try the Giant Crab great seafood get there around 2:30 and you will have a great meal look for Cynthia's table she's great.

    Fun Facts

  • Playing Grande Dunes' Members Dunes, a friendly course with a relaxed and tranquil demeanor, means that you can enjoy Pinehurst-like contouring of greens, big bunkers, and closely cropped grassy hollows. Play with a member or be accompanied by a caddie or forecaddie. If these two choices are not be enough, consider the plus side of caddie accompaniment. Your caddie is performs a valuable service for you for the price of your golf there: raking bunkers, cleaning the ball, leaving you feeling special.

  • Considered one of the more challenging courses along the Grand Strand, Long Bay Golf Course sticks in golfers' minds long after their 18th hole. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus and includes massive waste bunkers so large that they have a secondary use as cart paths. Long Bay also has man-made mounds well above sea level with plenty of room to hit a golf ball.

  • Long Bay's 7th, 10th, 13th, and 18th holes have appeared on the pages of local and national golf reviews for years for a reason - they are impressive. For example, players should select the correct tee location at Long Bay for their game. Many overestimate their potential and suffer the consequences.

  • Long Bay's 4th hole, a 472-yard par-4, is ranked the number 1 handicap and is the first hole to feature waste areas running down both sides of the fairway, the same track as the cart path. For wayward drivers of the ball, the sign there could just as well read: "Waste Bunker Is Your Next Shot, So Get Used To It."

  • Do you know your golf handicap? To get an estimate, take your scores from the last five rounds that you have played. Look up the ratings and slope for each of those courses played. Subtract the course rating from the score that you earned at each course. Multiply that number by 113. Divide that number by the slope of that particular course; the resulting number is called "the differential." Look at all the differentials for all five courses that you played. Take the lowest one of the five and multiply it by 0.96. The resulting number is your handicap.

No need to go through these steps each time. Several websites and software programs will calculate for you.
